Jug

Jug: A large jug of a piriform body, with a flat base and a long neck with a cut away spout. The jug has one handle from the shoulder to the area just below the cut away spout. The decoration is of a Red Polished I type of a red slip throughout the body of the jug. The surface of the pot is very worn and the slip has fallen in many areas. There are two small sherds from the top of the spout. The jug came from tomb 134 of the cemetery A in Vounous. The tomb was a single burial which was the original and the chamber had not been reused after the initial interment. Many jugs were discovered at the Vounous cemeteries and this indicates an emphasis on drinking ceremonies during funerals. The cut away spout would also faciliate communcal use of the vessel.
