The Compendium of Cypriot Pottery
Our mission with this project is to create a comprehensive and accessible resource that documents the diverse categories, types, and shapes of ancient Cypriot pottery across time. By collecting, organizing, and presenting this information in an engaging and easy-to-understand format, we aim to break down barriers to learning and provide a valuable tool for anyone interested in exploring the rich cultural heritage of Cyprus.
Through careful research and curation, we will showcase not only the common pottery styles but also highlight the complex and unique shapes that demonstrate the ingenuity and creativity of ancient Cypriot potters. By sharing this knowledge in a way that is easily browsable and understandable, we hope to inspire curiosity, foster appreciation, and ensure that the fascinating history of Cypriot pottery is accessible to all.
End to End Course on Cypriot Archeology
Our goal is to create an accessible and engaging course that covers Cypriot archaeology from the pre-ceramic Neolithic through to the late Archaic. By breaking down complex concepts and presenting them in a clear, easy-to-follow format, we aim to provide learners of all backgrounds with the opportunity to dive deep into the fascinating world of ancient Cyprus.
We hope the wealth of resources available on the website will aide readers in learning anything they may wish to learn.
Largest Online Catalogue of Cypriot artefacts
Many incredible online digitization efforts have been made or are underway by institutions such as the MET, the British Museum and others. The individual collections however often do not cover the entire spectrum of what ancient Cyprus has to offer, as well as being presented in a rather isolated fashion.
We hope that through the development of a large combined catalogue, we can provide a structured and centralized approach to browsing Cypriot artefacts, and referencing objects across collections.
Research Unveiled: Simplifying & Documenting Research for All
Over the hundred plus years of Cypriot archeology, a vast amount of literature has been written. This literature is however practically inaccessible to most, either due to the barrier in cost of academic journals, or the complexity and specificity of the language used.
We hope to help "translate" many of these key sources into either individual articles, or into combined works that are freely available and written in an easy to understand manner. Our aim is for all texts on the site to be accessible to undergraduate level students.
What really happened in the 1800s: Artifacts Lost to History
It is not a hidden secret that the world of Cypriot archeology begun in an era of incredibly destructive looting. While this type of high level information is accessible, and collections that survived in museums are well documented, many of the artifacts sold to smaller museums or private parties are not.
We hope to make available all documents pertaining to the original collections such as those of the Cesnola brothers, in the hopes that these lost artefacts can be found and appreciated by the public again.
An Interactive Historical Map of Ancient Cyprus
Visual and interactive teaching aids are an important, but incredibly expensive to produce, resource in the teaching process.
We hope to offer an interactive map of ancient Cyprus covering archeological sites through time, as well as offering a lens into the topology of the island.
A Comprehensive list of Cypriot Collections around the World
While the bulk of Cypriot collections are in Cyprus, the MET, the British Museum, the Louvre and the Ashmolean, we hope to document the remaining collections around the world, including the lesser known private ones.
A Complete Catalogue of Resources on Ancient Cyprus
While the goal of this website is to offer a singular resource for all things Cypriot, it would be idiotic to ignore the incredible resources that are already available.
Many of these resources are however not in English, out of print, or behind expensive paywalls. This project will document, in enough depth, the individual contents of all these texts.
