Bichrome Pedestalled Cup
Pottery pedestalled bowl or deep cup in Bichrome Ware; deep bowl with slightly convex, vertical sides, divided unequally by a horizontal ridge running around the body; low stem with concentric ridges on a wide, splaying foot; pair of opposing loop handles on the shoulder of the vase; buff-orange clay with a cream slip, decorated in black and red paint: on the body: two registers divided by the ridge and arranged in panels; above are panels filled with vertical parallel lines alternating with concentric semi-circles, stylised floral motifs and chevrons, below on each side are two fabulous birds (painted in silhouette) with exaggerated wings flanking a central geometric motif composed of vertical chevrons and parallel lines and semi-circles; solid foot and handles; parallel bands of paint in the interior.
