Bichrome IV Figural Oinochoe
Pottery Bichrome IV ware oinochoe or jug with figural decoration; ovoid-globular body on low annular foot; trefoil mouth with painted eye motifs on each side; vertical strap handle from shoulder to rim; buff clay and slip decorated with black and red bichrome decoration; band of black paint around vase at junction of body and neck; narrower horizontal lines and wavy band around the neck; black paint also around the rim and on handles; figural scene depicts a chariot driving towards the left with archer firing arrows from the back; chariot has an elaborate fretwork frame supported by decorated uprights bearing spikes (arrowheads?) and an eight-spoke wheel, both orignally painted in red though now mostly faded; the galloping horse is rendered in silhouette except for a single eye in profile and a band of chevrons or zig-zags along his flank; bearded driver, naked above the waist, wears a kilt with an elaborate belt; the bearded archer is much smaller than the driver but wears a long skirt decorated with cross hatches, a thick black belt and an upper garment with traces of red paint; issuing form the wheel is a large vertical tree motif in black.
