Black-on-Red Spouted Flask
Large pottery spouted flask in Black-on-Red ware; wheel-made; spherical body on a low ring base; moulded stepped knob on the top of the vessel; triple-ribbed arched handle; short tubular spout with strainer at front; the base is perforated like a rhyton (or 'trick-vase'); made of buff clay and orange-red slip decorated in black paint with concentric circles and concentrics; below the handle is a large fabulous bird with exaggeratedly long neck, legs and wings and a large open mouth: four sinuous hatched bands extend from its body, representing several wings (at least three?) and possibly a tail or a fourth wing sticking out from the back; the surface paint is worn in many places.
