Limestone Kouros Head

Head of limestone male figure (kouros); painted. Head is broken off right above the collarbone. Nose, mouth, ears and hair chipped. Surface, particularly at the back of the head is fairly weathered. Traces of black colour on chin, possibly a beard (?). The back of the head is flattened, the face is slim with large almond-shaped eyes which are slightly protruding, they are framed by plastically rendered eyelids above which the eyebrows are indicated. The mouth is large with full lips, which form a smile. The hair on the calvarium is rendered in separate tresses towards the front; the hair on the forehead forms two centrally parted tresses. Above those there are continuous strands of hair expanding from one temple to the other and falling down behind the ears; four patterned tresses are falling over the shoulders onto his chest, at least nine tresses are rendered on his back. Hole drilled in top of head for a (metal?) fixing. Object Type: figure Series: Höckmann Type 1 (Sub group 2 or 3) Techniques: carved
