Archaic II
Dea Gravida Terracotta Figurine
Terracotta figurine of a seated female figure with infant of the Dea Gravida type; solid, made with a one-part mould, flat back; the low base is hollow; she stands frontally supporting a child with her arms; she is dressed in a long gown (feet visible but toes are schematically rendered) but her breasts are emphasised through the clothing; the fingers are crudely rendered with a series of incisions, possibly after pressing in the mould; she has a triangular face with a pointed nose; the hair is arranged in two large balls on each side of her head, probably covered with a veil. The child is rather large and grown-up looking with hands almost as large as its mother; he has a pointed, almost beard-like chin and pronounced nose and wears a long peaked cap; made of pink-buff clay.
