Naue II Iron Sword
Iron sword of the 'cut and thrust' or Naue II or Snodgrass' Type IA variety; cast and hammered; relatively short blade with prominent mid-rib forming a lozenge-shaped profile, tapering evenly to the point and widening somewhat near the end of the hilt; the hilt (incomplete) is rectangular with a slight swelling for grip (less than Snodgrass' Type I), and was probalbly flanged, possibly with a tang on the end for the pommel; the surviving pair of rivets on the lower end of the hilt would have secured a handle of perishable material such as wood, ivory or bone; surface heavily corroded.
